Wilmorton - Page 2 of 2
Click an image for a large framed picture, but please wait for all the pictures to load first

Wilmorton is situated between the old railway technical centre building on London Road and Alvaston Park, the housing is mainly terraced houses that were built to serve the sprawling railway industry.

Factoids

  • St Osmunds Church on London Road was consecrated in 1905 at a cost of £5,940

The building above almost looks like it has been cut in half with a knife! this building is next to the Portland Hotel and has the same ornate architecture. The picture above right is a typical street scene in the area and below are similar scenes

The old Corporation bus depot on Ascot Drive now Arriva transport, below left is the old Railway technical centre and below right are the new buildings that have sprung up on the demolished loco works site on London Road

Probably Wilmorton's best known neighbour was Wilmorton Tertiary College, although now demolished and a housing development is sprouting up (2006), this college was built on the old Derby tip back in the 1960's

Above left is an old advertisement painted on the side of the Council owned building, this would have been next to the old canal and above right is the path of the canal, the canal was built around 1796. Below are the rows of houses on both sides of the Alvaston Park

A couple of advertisements painted on the side of buildings with D Cheetham tobacconist and newsagents shop below, the advert on the right is an old Players cigarette one. Not allowed today!
