West End

The West End area, particularly around Ford Street, Bridge Street and Agard Street has changed quite dramatically over the years, way back in the sixty's and seventy's various business's took up residence in the old railway bridge arches than spanned this area, on Friargate this is still the case next to the Friargate bridge. The pictures below detail the changes in the last eight years, many of the old mills and chimneys have disappeared from the skyline having being replaced with student accommodation, which is very evident in Agard Street.

These views were taken in 1997 on the corner where the new sixth form centre is now situated, the mill and chimney you can see have now gone, the pictures on the right were taken in 2005 from a similar viewpoint

On the left is the mill and chimney that you can see in the top pictures, this is a reflection in Markeaton brook, the mill has sadly now gone, the large student accommodation block on Agard Street now stands here.

You can see the accommodation block below right, which is caught well with the last remaining Derby Tapes Ltd mill building and chimney, which has been empty since 2003, the building was originally built around the turn of the 20th century

St Johns Terrace just off Bridge Street, the pictures at the top were taken in 1997 with the one opposite taken in 2005

Banks Mill , one of the remaining and restored Mills on Bridge Street,  it is now home to various small business's

The Grade II-listed Wesleyan Chapel, in Brook Street, this 1802 chapel was built by three preachers and became a Wesleyan chapel in 1856. It was one of Derby's oldest surviving chapels.

It has now been converted to a restaurant upstairs and a bar downstairs, and the plans stated that 35 out of 49 pews were going to be retained, the pulpit will be kept, but moved to a higher level, the existing rafters will be insulated and the staircase will be replaced.

Externally, gutters and pipes will be kept where possible. If they are beyond repair, then they will be replaced with aluminium ones.

All graves will also be retained and included in a landscaped area. The organ may have to go because it is in poor condition and the developer is considering donating it to another church. The Chapel was bought for £120,000 in an auction.

Agard Street

Left shows the Inland Revenue building and on the right is the new student accommodation

left are three remaining houses on the street and below right on the corner of Ford Street is an old house that is now used as offices for Derby Clutch Centre

The Pubs in the area, The late Bar above left on Ford Street, the woodlark on Bridge Street above right and below left the Brick and Tile on Brick Street

The Brick and Tile Brick and Tile Public House was built between 1690 and 1710, the later alterations included the third storey, there are a few original oak beams left and evidence of reed and plaster partition walls and the original staircase

St. John the Evangelist, on the corner of Mill Street and Bridge Street, which was built in 1828, designed by Francis Goodwin, it has no tower but four angle-turrets and pinnacles with projecting tops

left are a pair of old cottages on Mill Street and opposite these is the City Councils Youth House shown on the right

Not sure what the building is on the left, it's on the corner of Mill Street and Bridge Street but opposite this on Bridge Street we have these pair of fine Georgian Houses which were built around 1795, shown here on the right
