Toyota - Burnaston

Toyota is the
seventh largest company in the world and the third largest
manufacturer of automobiles, with production facilities in 26
nations around the world. In 1989, the decision to manufacture
in Europe was based on a corporate policy of building vehicles
where the customers are. At this time, Toyota was already
selling 400,000 autos and trucks each year in Europe, which
was the biggest market in the world, so the decision to invest
significantly in a market where more than 16.7 million
vehicles are sold each year was a logical one.

Burnaston Airfield as it looked before the closure in
1988. This is where British Midland Airways started as Derby Aviation, flying regularly to Jersey from this
grass airfield |

| This
certainly now looks like the land of the rising sun! |
|
The United
Kingdom was chosen for many reasons including its history of
vehicle manufacture, the large domestic automobile market, its
components supply base and its excellent links with the rest
of Europe. The Midlands was selected because of the
availability of people with a tradition of working in
engineering, a central location with excellent infrastructure,
proximity to an excellent supply base and a site suitable for
both the initial and future investment. |

the old Airport sign is left standing against a backdrop of
different stages of the construction |

Representing almost $2.1b, Toyota's investment is the largest
single UK investment by a Japanese company to date.
Dr. Bryan Jackson
OBE, Senior Director of Toyota Manufacturing UK, says
"The local community has warmly welcomed us, and the company
remains committed to its choice of location for Toyota's first
European automotive manufacturing operation. It would have
been difficult to achieve all that we have so far without
their support" |
|
The picture above
left shows the rows and rows of builders portacabins that were
necessary to administer this huge project |

Below are general
views looking up the A38 towards Burton showing the different
stages of the construction of the new road junction |
