Stores Road / Sir
Frank Whittle Way, underwent quite an expansion in the late
80's early 90's with many buildings being constructed, the
growth in the area was probably sparked off by Williams
Holdings decision to build there HQ in Derby, near to the
Pentagon Island, these pictures are taken around that time.
These pictures
were originally taken on 35mm slide film. |

Williams Holdings
Prestigous HQ
Sir Nigel Rudd
was born in Derby in 1947 and was educated at Bemrose Grammar
School, Sir Nigel became
chairman of Cardiff-based W. Williams and Son in 1982 and
during this time his company bought the Leys Malleable Casting
Company, soon afterwards he changed the name to Williams
Holdings. |
|
When he was the Chairman of Williams Holdings, they
became
industry leaders from there Derby HQ, they owned
flagship brands such as Chubb, Kidde and Yale.
It was quite a
coup for the City of Derby to steal a prestigious name away
from the traditional base of London, maybe this was do to
Sir Nigel's connections with the City and possibly it made
more
economic sense to base here |
   |
 |
|
His HQ was
certainly an impressive structure back in 1985, sadly the group
is being sold off and scaled down and may yet leave its home
in Derby. |

The picture above
left is looking down Stores Road towards the Pentagon Island,
note the vast open spaces! and the picture above right is also
looking towards the Pentagon Island but is is taken from the
Racecourse side of Sir Frank Whittle Road |
