St Peters church is the oldest medieval church in Derby. t was mentioned in the doomsday book, and still contains some Saxon fabric. There has been a church on the site since around 1044

In the 1860's the city council negotiated with the church council to buy a strip of the churchyard for £130 in order to widen St. Peter's Street. This was agreed upon and the council also paid for the erection of the wall which still fronts St. Peter's Street.

Ryan's Bar left, and on the right was the former Green Man Inn, this building boasts a rare Dutch gable which dates from 1671, next door shown right is another very old building, these buildings are along the lane on the left of the church

Boots, built in the Arts and Crafts style in 1912 by Albert Nelson Bromley of Nottingham, it is covered in plaster decoration called pargetting, which was an East Anglian craft,  Morley Horder crafted 4 statues of 4 famous Derby people, John Lombe, William Mutton, Florence Nightingale and Jedidiah Strutt, which adorn the top

Babington Buildings, built in 1898 and recently completely rebuilt with the exception of its fine red brick façade. Originally built as a Boot and Shoe Emporium it now houses one of Derby’s leading book shops, Waterstones

It is named after Babington House, which stood close by and which provided a welcome nights lodging for Mary Queen of Scots whilst on her way to imprisonment at Tutbury Castle as a prisoner of Elizabeth I

Above left, looking down St Peters Street from St Peters Church, below left looking up St Peters Street from St Peters Church, on the right are two pictures looking up from Marks and Spencer, the top one show lots of shoppers whereas the one below taken one hour previously the street is almost empty

An early postcard view looking down St Peters Street from St Peters Church

Above left this domed towered building was built in 1891 and for many years it was home to Boots, before they moved into the building across the road, (shown near to the top of the page) above right is an old cast iron road sign

This fine Tudor style building was built around 1890 and was occupied by the Drapers, EW Grimes & Co, they operated here from 1897 to 1956, more recently the Army Stores traded from here and it is now jointly occupied by Ladbrokes and Yeomans Outdoors, at one time the gables above Ladbrokes used to mirror the ones above Yeomans

This sign once advertised Thurman and Malin which was founded in 1879 by William Malin and John Thurman, it was described in 1891 as a drapers, hosiers and undertakers, the firm closed in 1970, in there heyday they were big rivals to the Midland Drapery. The building is also shown below, they also had premises around the corner on St Peters Churchyard

Spar Supermarket, on the left standing majestically at the top of St Peters Street, previously Deep Pan Pizza and before that a branch of Halfords. On the right a mock Tudor style building, not sure if this was next to the old Cheshire Cheese pub?
