St Peters
church is the oldest medieval church in Derby. t was mentioned in the
doomsday book, and still contains some Saxon fabric. There has been a church
on the site since around 1044
In the 1860's the city council negotiated with the
church council to buy a strip of the churchyard for £130 in order to widen
St. Peter's Street. This was agreed upon and the council also paid for the
erection of the wall which still fronts St. Peter's Street.

completely rebuilt with the exception of its fine red brick façade.
Originally built as a Boot and Shoe Emporium it now houses one of Derby’s
leading book shops, Waterstones
It is named after Babington House, which stood close by and which provided a
welcome nights lodging for Mary Queen of Scots whilst on her way to
imprisonment at Tutbury Castle as a prisoner of Elizabeth I |

This fine
Tudor style building was built around 1890 and was occupied by the Drapers, EW
Grimes & Co, they operated here from 1897 to 1956, more recently the Army
Stores traded from here and it is now jointly occupied by Ladbrokes and Yeomans
Outdoors, at one time the gables above Ladbrokes used to mirror the ones above
Yeomans |
