Below is the
old Derby Grammar School which was founded in 1160, this is the second oldest grammar school in the country,
a local business man Walkelin and his wife Goda turned their own house into
the school, the school received a royal charter and endowments from Queen Mary in 1554.
It then became a Free Grammar School and moved to a new building, shown below
which was used right up to 1840, the school then moved to St Helens House. A
new front gallery was added when Raymond's the photographers occupied the site
and then later the Heritage Centre (Richard Felix) took over. Notable former
pupils include;
-
Rev. John Cotton, Pilgrim Father (1630) and founder of Boston, Massachussetts.
-
John Flamstead, born 1646, First royal astronomer who founded the Greenwich
Observatory.
-
Joseph Wright, famous local artist born in 1734.
Charter of Mary Tudor 21st May 1554
" And further, we will and by these presents order and grant, that for the
future there is and shall be a free Grammar School for the instruction and
education of boys and youths in the said town of Derby" |
