Most of the interest is on the left hand side of the street, looking from the Strand although there are buildings of quality and interest at the top and bottom on the right hand side, and at the the Corn Market end.

Looking down from the Strand, the two grand stone buildings funnel your vision down the elegantly curved street, the former post office is on the right hand corner, unfortunately you get distracted from the qualities of the architecture by all the shop signage that adorn the fronts of the buildings as you can see below left, move the viewpoint up slightly below right and the distraction disappears, these are wonderful four story Victorian masterpieces

Opposite is St James Yard and the building below was the Corporation tram depot which is located behind Jimmys, on St James Street, built in 1867, C.A.Newton & Co Ltd, the electrical engineers eventually took over, they specialised in AGA storage cookers and water heaters

Plans are a foot to transform this area into a shopping plaza as planning permission has just been granted (April 2006)
