Derby river gardens were officially opened in 1934 and were created before the council house was built, they provide tranquillity away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. They were laid out in infilled wharves which edged the site of the old lead works, with the well known shot tower. Exeter bridge that crosses the River Derwent was built in 1931 by  the Borough Architect, C.H Aslin, also part of the County Borough of Derby Central Improvement Scheme

The gardens above in an early postcard view have changed dramatically over the years, the turtles that used to stand in the ponds have been transferred to Allestree Hall, one is shown below

The river and weir are a haven for wildlife, as these pictures show, the Canada Geese look like there enjoying themselves immensely and one is wondering what I'm doing getting in close!

An important feature of the river gardens are all the well established trees, and despite the buildings nearby, they give a countryside feel,  these picture s depict this well
