On the left
is the junction of Queen Street, Iron Gate, Cathedral Road and Full Street,
you'll notice St Michaels Church and waste ground beyond which was the NCP
car park, also Bridgegate BMW garage can be seen beyond that. Below shows
Cathedral Road, with the former Shell Service Station, and the former Queen
Street teaching pool and note there is no Joseph Wright Sixth form centre
yet, as these pictures were taken in 1988 & 1989 |
|
St Michaels
Church again taken a few years later, you'll now see the new office blocks
that were built on the NCP car park
Below is the
former Smith's of Derby clockmakers premises, who have recently moved to
Alfreton Road |

Smith's of Derby
started with John Whitehurst 1st in
1735. The first John Smith was apprenticed to the last of the Whitehursts,
namely John III, but he left to become a millwright. His wife Maria dealt
with customers and cleaned domestic clocks and watches during the day while
John repaired and reassembled them in the evening. In the 1860’s they rented
and later bought the property of 27 Queen Street from members of the
Whitehurst family. |

 |
The Company soon began producing hand wound tower clocks for churches, town
halls and private houses throughout the World. These products were,
and still are, highly regarded for quality. Of particular note was the building and installation of the
great clock of St Paul’s Cathedral in London in 1893. This clock has been
maintained by the company continuously ever since and is now one of 4,500 clocks maintained throughout the British Isles. |
