This is one of Derby's most recent housing development, and is Europe's biggest private housing estate. The first phase of
the development started back in 1979 on Bishops Drive
where it joins Mansfield Road. Most of the big names in the house
building market have contributed to this development. Construction
finally finished in 2004.
Until very recently Oakwood
didn't have a school, and it was thanks to the residents who
pushed the council to finally agree to one, (Parkview on Springwood
Drive). The estate did however boast 2 pubs!, the Oak and Acorn in
the centre on Bishops Drive and the Kings Corner on the outer
northern edge of the estate.
There are three
shopping centres, the largest on Bishops Drive, the other two are
on Vestry Road and more recently on Smalley Drive which
collectively cater for the
needs of the people
Factoids
-
The track remains of the worlds longest endless cable
tramway
-
Oakwood is also home to the city's only ancient woodland

A general view
of housing in Oakwood above, and opposite on the left is one of the many Oak
trees in the area, remnants of a great woodland, this one is on Bishops Drive
and is one of the largest, Oakwood itself has many green spaces, Oakwood Park
is shown above right |
|
The main
shopping area on Bishops Drive, serving the communities of Oakwood and
Chaddesden alike, the traffic island was a topic of debate for some time as it
was an overgrown mess, but thanks to some lobbying the Council has relented
and produced this floral display, note the intricate tiled roof opposite on
the extension that was completed late 2004 |

Thatched
Cottage Oakwood, but it's not what it seems, as this home was
built around the early 1990's |
|
These pictures
show the Kings corner area of Oakwood taken in 1991, prior to
housing and the construction of the Kings Corner pub. In the
two pictures left , the Seven Trent water facility can
be seen. Top left was taken on Morley Road, near to Locko Road
and the picture top right was taken on Lime Lane looking
towards the Kings Corner |
|
Above left and
right were taken 1991 pre Kings Corner Pub, and below similar views
taken in 2005 with the Kings Corner pub now fully established. |
|
Views across
open Country side at the top of Morley Road, above left we have Crossroads
Farm, which stands opposite the Kings Corner Pub, the farmhouse was built in
1972, and above right is the view
across Lime Lane towards Morley |
|
Above the site of Parkway School on Springwood Drive, and
below right the school now it's built. The trees in the
distance are part of Chaddesden Wood, this is the only ancient
oak woodland in the city of Derby, and covers around nine hectares, or
23 acres. Derby City Council acquired the wood in Nov 1990 and
shortly afterwards it
was declared a Local Nature Reserve in April 1991.
