Mickleover is 2 miles outside of Derby and despite the main supermarket in the village, the Old Market Place and Orchard Street around The Square means that the village retains its old character. The Great Northern Railway which arrived in 1876, meant the number of houses expanded in the village which has continued ever since. In 1968, the boundary of the city of Derby was extended and absorbed the village.

Factoids

  • The Old Hall in Orchard Street is the oldest building in the village
  • Oliver Cromwell stayed at the Old Hall during the civil war
  • All Saints Parish Church is 14th century although it was restored in the 19th century
  • The Community Centre used to be a National school for Boys and Girls in 1881
  • Britain's 1st Children's matinee was shown at the local school
  • The Nags Head pub used to have an old Pullman railway carriage in its garden

Above left the Old Hall, on Orchard Street, is one of the few surviving timber-framed buildings in Derbyshire. Dated from 1655, it was built by a Cromwellian officer, Captain Robert Crotchet. Box framed on a stone plinth infilled with brick nogging using a stretcher bond, it consists of two storeys, attic and gables. The roof was originally thatched but is now tiled. Inside, an oak staircase survives, with turned balusters and panelling. Oliver Cromwell once stayed here, while Tutbury Castle was under siege during the Civil War, above right is Mickleover House another fine residence,  and situated just opposite the Old Hall.

Old Hollow Cottage can be found on the Hollow, this is built in the cruck style and the cottage once had a thatched roof. An old stone drinking trough is also shown below right which is close by to the cottage

This is The Square which was once the Old Market Place, there are fine Georgian Cottages to be found around here and a few are shown below. Opposite on the left are the shops and the Masons Arms pub that adorn the area, and below left is the Masons Arms

A row of Cottages on The Green, you can clearly see the outside privies at the top of the gardens on the picture on the right

Another row of Cottages on The Green, proudly displaying floral arrangements of one kind and another.

The Row of Cottages below are on Station Road, the left hand one has been demolished to make way for more housing at the rear
