Mackworth estate is a large council estate built in the 1950's. Mackworth Tertiary College dominates the top of the estate. The streets all have a London theme such as, Knightsbridge, Mayfair Crescent, Edgware Road and such like. The other notable feature is the Seven Trent Water Tower which can be seen for miles around.

Factoids

  • Julia Watson, BBC Casualty actress used to live on the estate

  • Keith Hamer, TV test card collector, lives on the estate

  • Andrew Broughton, the famous autograph collector lives here

  • Emmanuel Fuh Neba also resides on the estate, (He was awarded the top UK accolade for his voluntary work alongside Amnesty International and was named the 'National Champion'  he was presented with his award by the former home secretary David Plunkett MP)

Prince Charles Avenue leading into Mackworth Estate via A52, the Water Tower on Radbourne Lane is clearly visible throughout the estate, as can bee seen in the following pictures

Opposite is the pumping station with the water tower below, water towers don't hold all of the area's water, generally  just a day's worth. When consumers use less water than the system is pumping, the excess water goes into the water tower through an intake pipe. When they use more water than is being pumped, the water starts flowing out of the tower through a different pipe.
A valve in the water tower monitors the level of water in the tower to prevent an overflow. Therefore water towers act as back-up tanks during peak usage hours.

The water tower must be tall enough to supply that level of pressure to all of the houses and businesses in the area of the tower. So water towers are typically located on the high ground, and they are tall enough to provide the necessary pressure. Each foot of height provides 0.43 PSI (pounds per square Inch) of pressure.

Radbourne Kennels and farm, just on the outskirts of the estate and only a few hundred yards up from the water tower, the area of land between the water tower and kennels is now subject to  controversy as outline planning permission has been sought for a housing development

The controversial area of land !

Just opposite the kennels, are two views across open countryside, on the left is Mackworth College and note the cranes on the right, constructing Derby's super hospital over in neighbouring Mickleover back in 2006

Mackworth Tertiary College (now part of Derby College) The intake of students are drawn from over twenty five different countries thanks to the international links and partnerships that the college has founded.
