Lathkill Dale
begins at Monyash as a shallow dry riverbed, this Dale is
one of the UK's finest limestone valleys. About one mile
further down the valley the river springs from a cave, except
during periods of drought, towards Over Haddon the river
becomes much wider and the Dale is heavily wooded. After
Conksbury Bridge the river takes a more gentle pace passing
through open pastureland eventually meeting the River Wye near
Haddon Hall
The Danes were
hereabouts too, and gave Lathkill Dale (hlatha-gyll) its
original name. Following the Norman Conquest the manor was
given to William Avenell, who in turn gave gifts of land
around the village to monasteries at Leicester and Roche Abbey
in Yorkshire. |
