The County Gaol
that was situated at the top of Vernon Street was opened in 1827.
In 1886 the name changed to HM Prison Derby. In 1933 the
Preston Greyhound Racing Association opened the site as a dog track, and
it became the Derby Greyhound Stadium, after the
decline of this it lay in ruins until it 1988 when it was sold
to a developer for £1m It then remerged as Vernon
Gate. Offices and apartments now adorn the site, the front
facade is all that now remains.
