Green Lane

On the left looking up Green Lane from outside Debenhams is this row of late 17th Century Cottages, whilst on the right this is the view from St Peters Churchyard looking down Green lane.

On the left the 1960's St Peters House office block on Gower Street dwarfs these old buildings on Green Lane and on the right was where once the well known Alf James Joke shop once stood

Opposite we have the Hippodrome which opened in 1913, it was designed by the Derby architect Alexander McPherson, originally built as a variety house, it then became a music hall, and more recently in the 1960's it became a bingo hall. The hippodrome's claim to fame was that Flanagan and Allen wrote there famous song "underneath the arches" in a dressing room, after seeing the railway arches in ford street

This ornate brickwork can be seen above the quicksilver arcade, on the corner of Green Lane and St Peters Churchyard, on the corner of Gower Street is the former Church which has been converted to a bar called Diva

The former Derby Central School of Art dating from the late 1878 which is now home to the Metro Cinema which is Derbyshire's longest running cinema, it opened on January 1981, the Metro Cinema is a registered charity supported by the Film Council, Derby City Council, East Midlands Arts, Media Salles Cinemas D'Europa, and The University of Derby. Next to the cinema is the Art School which is part of Derby University.

Above left next to the Metro Cinema is the Trinity Baptist Church and below is the Beaconsfield Conservative Club, on the corner of Wilson Street

The former Midlands Asthma & Allergy Research Association below (MAARA) which was founded in 1974, for many years this charitable organisation carried out tests on allergies and offered forms of relief to the sufferers. Dr Harry Morrow-Brown became the leading expert in his field, and he also invented the standardised prick test needle, which simplified taking skin samples.

The first pollen counts were also measured and issued out from these premises via Radio Derby, in 1981 MAARA transferred to premises on Vernon Street, and continued to pioneer the cause and treatment of asthma and other allergies. This building them became a Chest Clinic run by the NHS. In 2006 it is now destined to become a £2m homeless shelter with accommodation for 30 homeless people, including those with a dependency on alcohol.

The Springfield is a multi gabled Victorian building which was the former residence of Alfred Smith, the confectioner and wines and spirits merchant who had premises on Victoria Street. Also in it's history the building was used as a home to under privileged children. It is now named Chambers House

Below left and next door to the Springfield is this fine Georgian Terrace and a faded wall painted sign below right, on the Central Spiritualist Church

Opposite on the left is the former Navy recruitment centre before it moved over to the Main Centre and on the right which is directly opposite this was the former dental practice of Mr Shand

Mr Shand was a Scottish dentist who advocated "you should have salt on yer porridge lad and not sugar!"  Whilst sitting in his waiting rooms many a lad has gazed over to the Navy offices, in an attempt to take there minds of the dreaded dentist!

Another fine building near to the top of Green lane and below left is a view looking down Wilson Street and below right is a view looking down Forester Street
