Elton

There are no shops situated in the village but Elton has a small post office, church,
school and a sports field. Elton was mentioned in the Domesday book in 1086 when
it was owned by Henry de Ferrers. approximately
two hundred years ago, the main source of employment was
mining and farming. The modern day Elton has become something
of a hot spot for people that enjoy walking as a form of
exercise, as there are beautiful paths that curve around the
entire village.
Factoids
-
Fairies allegedly occupy Castle Ring, and they only come out
to dance when there's a full moon
-
Elton was mentioned in the Doomsday book of 1086

Elton is
situated on a hillside overlooking Robin Hoods stride, shown opposite and
below.
It lies on the
division between gritstone and limestone countryside and there are examples
of buildings and walls constructed with both types of stone in the village. |

Elton Village Hall on the right
which was the former Wesleyan Methodist Chapel |

An old stone
tablet on the wall above the porch is inscribed:
‘Wesleyan Methodist Chapel & Sunday School 1831’.
A plaque above this reads:
‘Elton Village Hall 1982’.
Inscribed round the archway of the porch:
‘Rebuilt 1923 Enlarged’. |
