Derwent Street - Area
Click an image for a large framed picture, but please wait for all the pictures to load first

At the top of Derwent Street stands the Council House on one corner and on the other is the former Magistrates courts, and Police Station, these buildings were designed by the Borough Architect, C.H Aslin, as part of the County Borough of Derby Central Improvement Scheme of 1929, and the Scheme didn't get completed until after the Second World War.

This picture opposite was taken in 1990 and was taken looking down Derwent Street towards the market place, the Council House is on the left, the white boarding you can see in the foreground is where the infamous Derby Hotel was being constructed, but it only got as far as a large hole!

The council house was started in July 1938 and was opened officially by the then  Princess Elizabeth and The Duke of Edinburgh in 27th June 1949. Below is the Police Station and Magistrates court, now boarded up and awaiting a decision on it's future

These Magistrates Courts were the Site of Exeter House, which was demolished in 1854, it was the Earl of Exeter's home at the time Prince Charles Edward Stuart stayed there, during the Jocobite rebellion in 1745, fifty years later in 1795  Jedediah Strutt took up occupancy moving from his Milford Home

The relief carvings above right adorn the Magistrates Courts and were part of the central improvement scheme of 1932, the courts were built in 1934

Compton House (National Westminster Bank) built in 1935, a two storey building built from stone and brick, flat roofed with parapets, originally built for James Harwood the printer and stationer by Naylor Sale and Widdows.  This is now one of Derby's few remaining Art Deco buildings

The pictures above and below left are looking down Derwent Street towards the Old Nottingham Road, the above picture was taken in 2005 with the garage forecourt closed down and in the picture below taken in 1990 you can see the garage is operational, also can you see the large flag poles on the picture below?

Below are the former Derwent Flats now Exeter House, a Council Flat complex on Exeter Place, all these buildings are all earmarked for redevelopment under the Cityscape regeneration scheme. Built in 1931 under the provisions of the 1930 housing act.

These three pictures show the new £14m apartment development at the old Eggleston Brothers premises, in Stuart Street, which overlooks the River Derwent. The developer Derby City Living Ltd, of Ashbourne, has bought the 0.73-acre site from the steel stockholder, which has recently moved to larger premises on Alfreton Road.

Derby City Living Ltd plans to build two buildings with a total of 76 luxury apartments between them.

Eggleston's have been in the city centre since the business started in 1809

Another view of the construction site at the Old Eggleston Brothers premises viewed from the bridge on the inner ring road, and below on the opposite of the road to Eggleston Brothers show a boarded up building, which is waiting it's fate under the Derby Cityscape Development.

On the left Exeter Bridge in 1990 viewed from the river gardens, and the same buildings taken in 2005, prior to these being built Graham & Bennett's wood yard graced these banks of the river

The picture below is looking towards the Royal Standard on Derwent Street, taken in 1990 from the river gardens

Below on the left are the different colours of the Royal Standard in 1990 it was dark red and white and in 2005 we find it black and white, which do you prefer? Below on the right are views of the Silk Mill from Exeter Bridge, not a lot of change apart from the foliage! the top picture of the Silk Mill shows the work in progress constructing the paved area next to the river
