Cheapside

St Werburgh's Church stands at the junction of Cheapside and the Wardwick and was the centre of a settlement named Wardwick around 700AD

The tower contains the (now named) Johnson Chapel, where Samuel Johnson married Elizabeth "Tetty" Porter in 1735.

In 1989 part of the building was converted into a shopping mall called the St Werburgh's Cloisters, this unfortunately failed due to a combination of factors including high rent, council tax and a lack of active customers possibly do to the cloisters being quite a distance from the main city shopping areas

Tucked away in St Werburgh's Churchyard, behind the former church off Cheapside,  are three cottages now converted to Seymour's Wine Bar and Restaurant which is known to be haunted by the figure of an old lady, dressed in grey, who is said to frequent the upper regions of the property

These three cottages were the rears of Ashleys chemist shop which closed down in the 1980's, Seymour's then took them over, at one time weaving took place in the upper floors. On the left winter 2006 and summer 2005 on the right

Adjacent to Seymour's you'll find this sign "Make T.Gorman your Exclusive Shoe Maker and Repairer", prior to T.Gorman, Robert Howitt was the boot maker in the premises

These three buildings front Seymours Pub and sit right on the corner of Cheapside and Bold lane, for many years there was a hardware store on this corner

The pictures on the left were taken in 1990, when these attic dormer windows looked in a sorry state, the same windows in 2005 shown here above right look a bit better, but I'm not sure about all that white planking!
