Carsington Reservoir Construction

Carsington Water has been a very popular visitor attraction since the reservoir was opened in May 1992 by Her Majesty the Queen.

The reservoir is owned and operated by Severn Trent Water and exists to store water pumped from the River Derwent at times of high rainfall, to store the water and return it to the river when the river level would otherwise be too low to allow water extraction for treatment further downstream.

Factoids

  • Opened by HM the Queen

  • Ninth largest reservoir in the Country

  • Capacity 7.8 billion gallons, enough to keep one person in water for over 500,000 years

  • Half a million trees and shrubs have been planted around the reservoir

This wasn't the easiest place to build a dam. In fact, planning began in the 1960s, the go-ahead wasn't given until 1979, and part of the original dam collapsed in 1984. It was levelled to its foundations, and work on the new design started in 1989.

The valley has been occupied since around 2000 BC. A Bronze Age burial mound was discovered near the Visitor Centre, and excavations in 1986 turned up human remains, flint knives, scrapers and pollen samples.

In Roman times, the area to the north was an important lead mining centre, and two Roman sites were discovered before the reservoir was built. The settlement at Carsington was abandoned not long after the end of the 4th century.

These pictures were taken in 1985 after the collapse of the dam and were originally shot on 35mm slide film and consequently are not as crisp as the digital images on the rest of this site.
