These gates can be found next
to the Multi story car park, they once were part of Bodens Pleasance which
was a small park in Bold Lane, where the multi story car park now stands.
The last reminder of this park is this monument to Henry Boden which were
part of its surroundings. |
  |
|
Boden was a lace manufacturer
and temperance campaigner who lived at the Friary. When he died in 1908 his
widow gave the "Pleasance" in his memory "for the perpetual enjoyment of the
citizens of the town" as the plaque records. In the 1920's it became a
children's recreation ground with swings, it deteriorated very badly over
the following years through neglect and lack of maintenance and then it
disappeared for good under the present day car park. |
|
The court closed down in 2005 when a new court building was built just up
the road, next to the old court can be found the Thai Dusit restaurant,
above right, which was originally called Melbourne House, being built in 1899. |

The New
magistrates court building on the corner of St Mary's Gate and Jury Street |
|
Above left
and right is the Mega Zone and Willows indoor sports centre, also you can
see the new access road to the new Joseph Wright sixth form centre, as you
can see this road isn't formally open yet, opposite on the right is the
ambulance station which is next to Willows
Below is the
new Joseph Wright sixth form centre, centre picture viewed from Bold Lane
and on either side are views from the A6 bridge over the inner ring road |

 |
|
Above, left
and right these were
originally the Corporation stables built in
1879 by Thomas Colthurst, the Buck in the Park motif can be seen in the tower.
|
  |
|
Thanks to
Peter Eyre for the following; "This building was also the HQ for the Fire
Brigade and was also used extensively during and after the second world war
by the AFS. My dad was a a Station Officer and served both here and later at
Ascot Drive. I frequently came here as a child and I was used as a victim
for rescue purposes etc"
It is now used by the
City Museum as a storeroom, the stables over the years have been partially
demolished and altered. |
