Ashbourne Road - Area
Click

wait for all the pictures to load first
From the Markeaton Island Ashbourne Road is a mile long stretch into
the city centre. If you've not done it yet, prepare yourself
for 'The Mile'.
Traditionally undertaken on a Friday night
revellers would have started the evening at The Derbyshire
Yeoman, which was part demolished in 1988 in favour of a
McDonalds, so these days 'The Mile' starts at The Traveller's
Rest, shown below left, the revellers would then stop of at every pub along the
way, there are 20!
Factoids
- There are over 20 pubs on the Derby Mile
- The Thirsty Scholar used to be called The
Garrick and it was one of Derby's best gig venues
- This area is notoriously haunted
|
|
The Travellers
Rest above left, above right Waggon and Horses, below left the Gallant Hussar
and below right the Swan and Salmon |
|
Above and
right is a rare vacant piece of land next to the Royal School for the deaf !, in the
background on the picture to the left you can see the apartment block
development on the former Chelful factory site |
 |
 |
 |
 |
Ashgate
Primary School left and above is the old Toll Gate building, now called
Tollgate House and home to a software company |
|
Above right
is the newly built Methodist and United Reformed church. In 1985 the
Methodist and United Reformed churches in Derby decided to unite and erect a
new church and community centre in Derby. On the right and below are various
cottages lining the route into Derby |
 |
 |
|
As you can see this fine house which used to stand next to Ashgate Primary
School has been demolished to make way for a new apartment block |
|
The house below was next door to the one above and has also suffered the same
fate |
|
The building
above left was built in the 1600's and was once a butchers
shop, W H Farmer's, and on the right next to his shop
was the well established pork butchers of George Goodhall who
still remain there today. |
