Abbey Street,
stretches from Burton Road at the top right down to it's
junction with Curzon Street, and over the years has seen quite
a bit of development with various slum clearance programs, and
during 2008 - 2009 further work is in progress with buildings
and land being developed for the provision of a new inner ring
road.
Factoids
-
Joan Rice the popular cinema starlet of the 1950s was born
on Abbey Street
|
|
Dorothy Joan Rice was born on 3 February 1930 at the City Hospital in Derby,
one of four daughters of Hilda and Harold Rice of 314 Abbey Street, Derby.
Her early life was fraught with troubles, for her labourer father was
imprisoned for child abuse, and as a consequence Joan spent several years
being cared for in a convent orphanage in Nottingham. |

Above is the
old car park at the Macklin Street end of Abbey Street, and below taken from
the back of the car park, is the corner of Monk Street and Drewry Lane,
bottom left taken in 1988 and bottom right taken 2007 |
|
Above right
a little further up are boarded up houses awaiting demolition in 1988, above
left is the boarded up DIY shop on the corner of Macklin Street 1988,
controversy
ensued as the premises
changed it's use to become a sex shop in the late eighties |
|
2007 sees
further developments as Derby's long awaited inner ring road finally gets
approved, these terrace houses are boarded up and ready for demolition. In
2009 these are now demolished as the new road sweeps in. |

Below are views of Curzon Street in 1988, around
this time a building in the vicinity below collapsed, not sure if it was the
one below with boarded up windows, a new building was eventually erected, Curzon Street was closed off for a couple of days, whilst the building
was made safe, fortunately no one was hurt |
